Practice Statement

I BELIEVE: 1) It is in the context of relationship that we make the deepest change. 2) We grow and excel in an environment with just the right amount of support & challenge. 3) We must feel understood-by ourselves, yes, and often by another--before we can make change. 4) Engaging in our passions make us come alive. These four core beliefs guide my work as a psychologist, life coach, author, radio host, and performer. Working collaboratively and fostering safe spaces, together we can increase awareness and create experiences that allow our best selves to emerge.

First, I listen deeply and whole heartedly. I then shuttle between what I hear you saying is happening now and how you want your life to be different. As you try new behaviors, I help with 1) Increasing helpful thoughts and behaviors--and reducing unhelpful ones, and 2) Celebrating successes.

While I offer collaborative, integrative individual and couple psychotherapy, one of my favorite parts of my workweek is Tuesday night Group Psychotherapy for Men and Women.

Clients have said that they feel very comfortable and accepted when they work with me, and find that they benefit by the insight they gain and skills they learn. I am trained in EMDR and Compassion Focused Therapy which support each other in helping you resolve past issues and embrace more positive self-concepts. Both involve "brain training" to help you understand why you are reacting the negative way you are, and change it for the better.

Practice Statement: My practice focuses on the intersection of trauma with chronic pain. We know that chronic stress from untreated trauma often shows up as pain in the body. When we address the trauma, the
pain often resolves. Sometimes the trauma is the direct cause of the pain, as in the case of car accidents, and sometimes it is indirect, as in cases of non-specific tension throughout the body that often presents as a result of unresolved traumatic experiences.  Additionally, as a mom of three autistic kids, I am especially sensitive to the ways in which living in a world not set up for autistic individuals can set the stage for traumatic experiences, and
I often work with autistic adults who have experienced trauma.  I also frequently work with people with dissociative disorders, since often dissociation plays a role in chronic pain. I use clinical hypnosis, including ego state interventions, to assist in determining the function of dissociation and what is required to reduce the need
for dissociation.

Other long-term traumatizing circumstances frequently require a different approach - combining Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Attachment-focused therapy, and (if needed) EMDR Therapy as well. As we work together I ask for specific examples of how each client experiences DID and together we creatively produce a process to reintegrate the client with themselves. Some DID issues are spiritual in nature and some are physical in nature.  It is important to identify the source for effective treatment.)  I also plan on continuing education in the area of DID in 2017.

Practice Statement: You've been through a lot of pain in your life, but nothing has stopped you yet. You've persevered and gotten this far. Yet you keep finding yourself stuck in the same patterns. Your history doesn't define you, but you can't seem to leave it behind either. When life is just too overwhelming you find yourself self medicating, overeating, overspending, or doom scrolling through social media just to get a few moments of relief. At times you get irritable, snap at your kids or your partner, or disengage altogether. You know there's a better life waiting for you, but it's so elusive.

That better life is closer than you realize. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) has been helping people just like you to heal from their past and break free from unhelpful patterns for decades. We won't waste time chasing symptoms or dealing with the crisis of the week, we'll pull the weed up by the roots.

Let me help you break the cycles, like so many have before you. You've taken the most important step already, but don't let it end here. Keep the momentum rolling. Call for a free consultation or send an email to get the process started.

Practice Statement: I believe that healing from past hurts and traumas occurs when people are offered the opportunity to heal in a safe and healthy environment. I value working collaboratively with my patients and strive to create an equal power balance in our relationship. This means that clients who work with me get to make decisions about what they believe is the best course of treatment for them. I regularly tell my clients, "You will always be the expert on you and you will always know you better than I do."

I consider all facets of a person when I present treatment approaches. In addition to a multicultural feminist therapy approach, I also use evidence-based skills and techniques from other therapy modalities, including cognitive-behavioral therapy, cognitive processing therapy (CPT), dialectical behavioral therapy, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy (EMDR), and client-centered therapy. I have found that the combination of these therapies foster healing.

Practice Statement:

Children are constantly communicating with the people around them. When children are having difficulties or challenges, the first step is always to learn to listen more deeply to the child and then to move forward from there. The right support for children and families can bolster resilience and allow them to thrive no matter what challenge they face. I use a strengths-based approach to use what already works well for a child or within a family system as a foundation for further growth and development.

I work primarily from attachment/attunement, child-centered, sensorimotor, narrative, and solution-focused theoretical perspectives. From those foundations, relationships take center stage. A main goal for the therapy I offer is to enhance and deepen family relationships while increasing positive interactions, enjoyment, and well-being.

I specialize in customizing the methods of psychological, emotional, and psychospiritual healing to the client, co-creating both the therapeutic environment and the work to fit individual needs. In addition, I am available to consult with physicians to support the client’s physical health and wellbeing through integrative practices.

Couples work often involves the exploration and untangling of childhood attachment injuries and traumas that adversely affect bonded adult relationships. I specialize in helping couples establish/re-establish intimate bonds of safety and attachment to one another. For couples “on the brink” of separation or divorce, I offer Discernment Counseling - a limited-session targeted approach to assist in determining the best course of action to move forward and get relationally un-stuck.

Weekly Therapy Groups are offered yearly between September and May, and are designed to help participants practice symptom management, mindfulness, authenticity, self-compassion, and relational support. The group is mixed gender and the ages typically range from 20s-70s. Some clients return yearly and others get what they need over the course of one cycle. This popular group is closed, meaning that once the group begins for the year, no one else is added.

Practice Statement:

Therapy provides a safe space to work together in exploring solutions to challenging thoughts, feelings, and situations. Interventions are tailored to individual situations and client needs. This can include use of EMDR for trauma processing and challenging negative cognitions, CBT with a psychodynamic and humanistic approach, and play therapy with children. Individuals and families experience moments of distress that impacts everyone in the home. Repairing relationships requires developing communication skills and openness to change. This includes anxiety, depression, behavioral concerns, attachment, school transitions, complex issues (ex: trauma, grief/loss, parenting changes) & substance use. As a Registered Play Therapist, I approach child distress as a response to changes in family structure, nurturing and consistency in caregiver relationships, and coordination between parents, social resources, and schools. My play therapy room adds an extra space for a child's healing and growth to occur.

Practice Statement:   I work with adults and teens who are experiencing chronic or acute PTSD, anxiety, depression and related disorders. As an EMDRIA Certified Clinician and an EMDRIA Approved Consultant, I have found that Eye Movement Reprocessing and Desensitization (EMDR) is one of the best methods to stimulate the brain’s natural ability to move toward health. I also incorporate Narrative therapy and Internal Family Systems into the work. I have specialized training in racialized trauma, early trauma protocol, attachment-based EMDR, and complex dissociation.

I use a collaborative approach and an empowerment model to increase your choices and control which will allow us to create the conditions necessary to access your brain’s adaptive information processing (AIP) system using EMDR. This system will support and guide the process that heals your traumatic injuries and promotes new possibilities for your life.

I explicitly acknowledge that white supremacy impacts every single aspect of our lives as citizens in the United States, including every single aspect of the mental health system. I strive to understand my own conditioning within this system and intentionally engage in an anti-racism practice model.

Practice Statement:

Most mental health issues can be traced back to trauma.  Trauma can originate from many different types of life experiences. If you feel anxious, depressed, sad, or unsafe, or if you feel you're not good enough, or unworthy, not smart enough, if you have feelings of anger/rage, shame or guilt, etc., chances are you have experienced some degree of trauma in your life. Alcohol, drugs, over-eating, work-a-holism, shopping to excess, etc. are some of the ways can we use to suppress and/or over-ride these uncomfortable beliefs and feelings we carry from past trauma. One does not need to continue living and suffering in this way - healing and happiness are available to you.

With effort and a little time you can heal. The path to healing is simple, but requires effort on your part. I'm skilled at this work and have years of experience. I have guided many clients on their path to freedom and happiness, and I'd be happy to work with you.

Practice Statement: I have extensive experience working with survivors of both single incident and complex trauma throughout my career. I seek to create an environment where clients‘ strengths and the strengths of their communities and cultures are honored and built upon as they learn to navigate their external and internal world with greater freedom. I honors that many survivors of trauma have found little benefit from psychotherapy or have even found it harmful. My approach to trauma work is client-driven, only discussing trauma details if and when the client believes it is in their best interest. I firmly believe that significant healing from the impact of trauma can occur before discussing the details of the traumatic incident itself.

I currently provide therapy for clients ages 14 and up. Services are offered via telehealth throughout Minnesota. I also offer Trauma and Tension Release Exercises (TRE) as a stand alone service outside of therapy if you are already engaged with another therapist or have engaged in significant trauma therapy in the past and are looking for additional tools to aid your healing journey.

Practice Statement:
I work with clients who have seen some pretty intense sh*t. They’ve
seen great darkness in their lives, often sexual abuse, but other types
of trauma as well. They’ve done a great job building a picture-perfect
life for themselves: the American dream. But it’s a defense
mechanism. It’s an illusion, so no one can see the darkness lurking
under the façade. It’s also an attempt to try to create on the outside
what they want to feel on the inside. But it doesn’t work. And, they

feel like they were lied to because they did everything they were
supposed to do to be happy, but their lives feel empty, disconnected
and like massive burdens.
The primary reason they are coming to me, even if they can’t
articulate this, is because the darkness from their past is impacting
EVERY ASPECT of their present. It’s controlling their lives and it’s
doing so outside of their conscious awareness. So, I use a
combination of traditional and esoteric methodology to go into their
subconscious mind and help them find and heal what’s lurking in the
shadows, in the darkness, so they can break out of their prisons of
responsibility, give up their mask-wearing charades, stop losing their
sh*t and learn that freedom and joy aren’t just pipe dreams.

Practice Statement: "The people I enjoy working with most are the ones who aren't sure therapy is for them, or haven't had great experiences in the past. I get what it's like for therapy not to go well. Maybe they're nervous I'll side with their spouse. Maybe they're worried it'll be too much too fast. The best part of my job is discovering the unique stories of each person who comes into my office, then developing a relationship to support their progress towards a more comfortable, resilient way of living.

I have lived many lives in many places, so I find I can connect to a wide range of people.  My approach comes from a place of unconditional positive regard (no shaming or guilting) and client-directedness (I trust client's instincts about what needs to happen when). I am comfortable balancing gentleness and directness in a way that can maintain the therapeutic relationship and encourage growth." I've completed structured training in the following approaches: Somatic Experiencing for trauma (finishing Intermediate level), Gottman couples therapy (level 2), Emotionally-Focused couples therapy, Internal Family Systems, Sandtray, experiential therapy, nondirective play therapy.
